St Peter’s Shaftesbury – About us

You will find a warm welcome whenever you visit St Peter’s, from its members as we worship on Sundays, and from its stewards during the week. Even when stewards are not there the church remains open so you will receive a calm, peaceful welcome from the Lord himself. The church is a thriving community of Christians, who love the Lord, want to worship Him and to live out their lives in His service.

We believe that if our worship is in the Spirit then all things will follow. Our main act of worship is a Common Worship Holy Communion, We offer prayer for healing with the laying-on-of –hands most Sundays. Around 100 worship each Sunday, and there is much joy in our worship. We also offer quieter traditional Book of Common Prayer worship on some Sundays.

Children are valued at all our worship. A Sunday School meets in the church and  a monthly family service gives a particular focus to our young and young at heart, where exciting things often happen! We run the team’s thriving “Lighthouse”; a children’s midweek group. We also run a reading club to help with reading at our Church of England Primary School.

We have a strong musical tradition, with an harmonious choir, and during Family Services and some special events our worship band leads modern hymns and choruses. We have a good team of bell ringers calling us to worship each week.

St Peter’s people value meeting in small groups for fellowship and learning. We have home groups offering different experiences from contemplative prayer to bible teaching, and a prayer-for-healing chain to support those in need.

Food and fellowship are important features of our church life. Refreshments are available after each main act of worship and some folk also visit the nearby Salt Cellar café after services. Refreshments and cake are served in the church hall after Family Services. Our various suppers and social events are central to our life together as the family of God.

The church building is the oldest in Shaftesbury, dating from the 1300s, but has been modernised inside. It is literally the prayerful heart of the community, nestling on the High Street between Town Hall and The Mitre public house! Many people visit it for peace and quiet during the week. Our churchyard has won awards over recent years in “The Living Churchyard” competition.

We are currently reaching out to east Shaftesbury, to those moving into the new houses, to young families, and to those furthest away from the church building. Our mission is to…

Worship Christ with others       Take Christ to others
Serve Christ in others       Bring others to Christ

A parishioner says, “St Peter’s is a church alive in the Spirit!”
