Pilgrim Service: War, Peace…

“Pilgrim Service”
Sunday 8th July 2018 - 6.00 pm
St James’ Church, Shaftesbury

After a tiring day the storm has caught Pilgrim in the open a few miles from his destination. He only has time to dash through the lowering sky and stinging rain for shelter before the storm breaks in all its fury: a roaring, wailing cacophony of wind, blinding lightning flashes that leave stark windblown images on the retina, and the persistent hiss of rain. Pilgrim’s clothes are soaked and he huddles back under his rock as rivulets form and rush past him in a chilly flood. It sounds as though all heaven’s orchestra has broken loose; However, Pilgrim is so tired that he falls asleep without knowing it – his last thought ‘And there was war in heaven…’.

He awakes to a different world: a sunlit dawn sky; raindrops twinkling on the tips of grass and leaves; a sky washed clean of dust and his destination clearly visible; a vast silence only broken by a blackbird’s song. He gets up, stretches, and a tune comes into his mind: ‘O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the works your hands have made…….’

This reflective service in the Celtic style provides a space for reflection with music and fellowship and refreshments with us afterwards. - All welcome
